Dance has been around for millennia, and from the earliest humans to the time when we can travel into space, it’s one of the few things that unite humanity. As a way of expressing our emotions, dance can be freeing, entertaining, and a way to connect with others through our passion. But while most of us can dance in front of our mirrors, we all wonder how we might compare to others who have experienced it as we have.

Competitive dancing started as a way to bring together all those who’d dedicated their lives to the art. In these events, masters of choreography battle against those that excel in form and rhythm to win the ultimate bragging rights as the best dancers and crews. If you feel as passionate about dance as we do, then you’re probably curious about the rules of competition.

Determine if Competitive Dance is For You

If you are like us, then dancing is probably something you’ve done when you’re feeling happy, sad, or simply relaxing. Dance is one of those things that can change our moods at all times, but when it becomes competitive, not all of us can handle it – and that’s okay.

Competitive dance is a bit different from what you would do in front of your mirror at home because the stakes are higher, and with everyone watching, the pressure can be intense. Still, if you’ve always felt drawn to dance competitions, you can overcome the initial anxiety that comes with it.

To know whether competitive dance is for you, you can start by checking out some competitions around you. You can find local competitions by checking dance pages on social media, and if you prefer a virtual experience, watch a show online. For a truly immersive experience, you can also explore a local dance school or event, provided you confirm that it’s in a safe location.

Either way, competitive dance is an interesting pursuit that can help you discover a different version of yourself. You can learn everything, from teamwork to resolving differences, and win or lose, you can network with all kinds of folks.

Research Different Dance Styles

Just like we all have different personalities, there are so many dance styles out there and about as many competitions that bring together those that love them. Whether you love form or freestyles, there are multiple ways to express yourself and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Some of the best dance styles in the world today are:

  • Ballet
  • Ballroom
  • Contemporary
  • Hip Hop
  • Jazz
  • Tap Dance, among others.

With all these dance styles to choose from, the only thing you need to do is pick one or several that appeal most to you. Before you choose one, research what other people do by watching videos online, taking a beginner’s class, trying out the moves, or simply practicing to see what you’re capable of. You might be surprised by what you can do once the beat gets into your system.

Rules of Competitive Dance

Dance competitions have different vibes, and while some have stipulated rules, others can be a bit loose with the guidelines. Still, some rules must be followed by performing dancers, as highlighted below.

  • One performer can do a solo dance in a competition
  • Solo performers can’t repeat the same styles in a single competition
  • Ballet routines shouldn’t have acrobatic styles
  • Performers are allowed to dance on two lyrical solos within the same competition
  • Costumes and get-ups should match the dancer’s age
  • While doing props, the performer’s feet shouldn’t go above six feet

It goes without saying, but dancers are expected to conduct themselves with respect for peers, whether they win or lose.

The Judging Process for Competitive Dance

If you’re a fan of TV competitions, you’ve probably noticed that each show has its own unique way of judging dancers. Some shows allow judges to rate dancers, while others can even involve audiences by using sound meters to measure the applause.

TV shows aside, most dance competitions consider the following categories during competitions:

  • Execution of movements
  • Dancer’s form
  • Costumes
  • Routine (difficulty is rewarded)
  • Music and choreography

Dancers that win competitions get perfect scores, which can be tabulated to 100 points given by each judge on the panel.
